Note: Although Poole’s primary interest on this map is the 1833
Peoria – Galena State Coach Road surveyed by Levi Warner, he has
penciled in a road leading from Gratiot’s Grove to Galena. The Gratiot’s
Grove road probably was a remnant of an early Kellogg alignment and was
recorded on the 1833 map of Illinois published in Tanner’s Universal
Atlas, (published in Philadelphia, 1833, and reprinted by the
Illinois State Historical Library in 1968). Gratiot’s Grove (in present
day Wisconsin) was an important early settlement in Wisconsin’s
Shullsburg mining area. J.P. and Henry Gratiot bought their land at the
Grove from the Winnebago Indians in 1829, and their mining and smelting
facilities were in full operation prior to the Black Hawk War.
